Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, called medu netjer or "words of the gods", were a formal writing system used from around 3200 BCE.

Combining logographic, syllabic, and alphabetic elements, the system contained over 750 distinct signs.

The script was eventually deciphered in the 1820s using the Rosetta Stone.
