A large Bivalve

A bivalve is a mollusk that has two shells connected at a hinge by a ligament and closed by muscles.

The ligament, made of organic material, is rarely preserved in fossils.

Bivalves would burrow into the sediment, bore into stone, or attach themselves with a filament.
