Ancient Roman Glass Balsamarium
This elegant Roman glass balsamarium is a fine example of the craftsmanship and aesthetic refinement characteristic of ancient Roman scent and cosmetic vessels. Standing 14.5 cm tall, it features a twin-tube body joined seamlessly along their length, with each tube encircled by a delicately applied trailing thread that spirals downward in an ornamental pattern. At the top, two small handles bridge the paired chambers, adding both functional grip and decorative appeal.
Originally intended to hold perfumes, oils, or medicinal unguents, balsamaria like this were prized personal luxury items, used in daily grooming as well as ritual and funerary contexts. The vessel’s surface shows attractive iridescence and weathering consistent with centuries of burial, enhancing its visual depth and historical presence. Its form, combining utility with artistic flourish, exemplifies the sophistication of Roman glassworking techniques during the Imperial era.
