Egyptian Scarab - "Amun is my Lord" - Devotional Motto Scarab

Three views of an ancient Egyptian scarab amulet with carved hieroglyphs on a black background

A beautiful devotional scarab with the personal declaration "Amun is my Lord".

The scarab has a high-domed back with detailed head and wing cases, side plates with deeply hatched legs, longitudinally pierced. What makes it special is the well-preserved greenish glaze - still covering most of the surface with ancient mineral deposits, excellent for this type.

The base is carved with the beloved New Kingdom motto "Imn nb=i" - "Amun is my Lord". The inscription shows the name of Amun, the lord sign, and a standing figure of the devotee in adoration. This was the most popular personal piety phrase of the 18th-19th Dynasty.

After the expulsion of the Hyksos, Amun-Ra became king of the gods and supreme deity of the Egyptian empire. To declare "Amun is my Lord" on a scarab was to place oneself under the direct protection of the highest god. Such motto scarabs were worn daily as declarations of faith, combining the rebirth power of the scarab beetle Khepri with the supreme power of Amun.

A classic New Kingdom devotional amulet with wonderful old label to prove it.
